QLD: Hill and Beattie clash over turtles
Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE is engaged in another brawl with federal Environment
Minister ROBERT HILL, this time over turtles.
Senator HILL says Queensland is threatening the survival of the endangered eastern
Australian loggerhead turtle by not supporting sustainable prawning.
He says trawlers working in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park should be compelled
to use turtle excluder devices.
Senator HILL says one of the primary cases of the decline in loggerhead turtles is trawling.
But Mr BEATTIE says Senator HILL is being childish, and he's urged the minister to
sit down with him like mature adults and thrash issues out.
Mr BEATTIE and Senator HILL clashed recently over compensation to farmers affected
by Queensland's new tree clearing legislation.
