SA: British TV station withdraw slur on Adelaide
South Australian MP NICK XENOPHON says Britain's Channel 4 has apologised for callingAdelaide the murder capital of the world, in a documentary about the disappearance ofbackpacker PETER FALCONIO.
The report was screened on British television on July 18, and also named Australiaas the most dangerous place for serious assaults.
The comments raised immediate objections from the independent MP, along with the SouthAustralian opposition and Tourism Minister JANE LOMAX-SMITH.
They all wrote to Channel 4 demanding a retraction and an apology, as well as a numberof South Australians who emailed the station.
Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD also expressed concern.
Mr XENOPHON says Channel 4 has responded to the public campaign and apologised forthe reference to Adelaide.
He says he's received confirmation that a letter of apology has been sent to the AustralianHigh Commission in London.
The station has also agreed to remove the offending part of the documentary which isdue to be rescreened this week.
